How to make a 3D model: 4 methods, compared
“How do I make a 3D model” has four honest answers, and which one is right depends entirely on what the model is for. Here is what each method actually costs, where it breaks down, and when to reach for it.
Method 1: Traditional 3D software
Blender, Maya, ZBrush, or CAD tools like Fusion 360. You build the geometry yourself, vertex by vertex or surface by surface.
This is the only method that gives you exact control over every dimension, which is why it’s the only real option for a part that has to mate with something else, fit a specific enclosure, or hold a precise tolerance. It’s also a genuine craft: expect weeks to learn the basics and hours to days per model even once you’re competent.
Use it when: the model needs to be exactly right, not just plausible. Mechanical parts, architectural work, anything going into a CAD assembly.
Method 2: Photogrammetry and 3D scanning
You take many photos of a real object from every angle (or use a dedicated 3D scanner), and software reconstructs the surface from where those photos agree with each other. Unlike the other methods here, this one measures a physical object rather than inferring what it probably looks like.
The catch is the capture itself. You need consistent lighting, a turntable or a lot of walking around the object, and patience with reflective or transparent surfaces, which don’t scan reliably. Cleanup afterward (filling holes, removing noise) is its own skill.
Use it when: you need an accurate digital copy of a specific real object that already exists, for archival, heritage, or reverse-engineering work.
Method 3: AI image-to-3D
Upload one photo, and a model generates the geometry and texture for you. We build one of these: it takes about 5 minutes, needs no 3D software, and produces an interactive, AR-ready model plus every common export format.
The tradeoff is honesty about what you’re getting: this is plausible geometry, not measured geometry. The system infers the back of an object it never saw a photo of. For a decorative piece, a collectible, a game asset, or a product shot for an online store, that’s rarely a problem. For a part that has to fit something else, it’s the wrong tool: see Method 1.

Use it when: speed and zero learning curve matter more than measured precision. Ecommerce, prototypes, collectibles, game placeholders, AR previews.
Method 4: Hire a 3D artist
A freelancer or studio builds the model for you, typically from reference photos or a written brief. You get expert judgment and the ability to ask for revisions, at freelancer rates and freelancer turnaround, usually days at minimum per model.
Use it when: the model needs a level of artistic polish or a level of communication back and forth that no automated method can give you, and the budget matches.
Which one should you use
Start from what the model has to prove. If it has to fit or measure correctly, that’s Method 1 or a carefully scaled Method 3 result, never a raw AI or scan output. If it has to be an accurate copy of something real, that’s Method 2. If it mostly has to look right, convey the product, or let someone explore it from every side, Method 3 gets you there in minutes instead of days.
